GPRS+Bluetooth = so sweet [Feb. 10th, 2004|10:14 am]
Brad Fitzpatrick
Sitting on a bench... nice and warm... cool breeze....

Open laptop. Connects in seconds.

Browsin' away and reading mail. Now if only there was anything interesting on the net...

Oh how I wish I had unlimited GPRS. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with AT&T's overpriced GPRS ($20/8MB, $80/unlimited) until at least May.

You can read all about kiddies swiping address books via Bluetooth: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/02/10/0654252

I've been heavily pondering some metro-wireless/GPRS/something for my laptop in the last week or two.

But I live around manhattan... what's the point? I guess there's the 25 minutes each way on the ferry... or I can go sit in lovely central park and get mugged. I'm sure if I wander around enough with kismet I could usually find a hotspot anyway.

How're the suburbs working out for you? :)

Re:

You're so thug. Make sure you bring your gun to central park while you GPRS there, because it's so crime-ridden nowadays.

I have to go milk the cows now. :P

Re:

I always keep a few spare side-arms, in case they're still thirsty after my first few clips run out.

The squirrels are more to be worried about than actually getting mugged right now :) They're violently hungry from it being abnormally cold.

A lot of what actually stops me is central park being a bit of a ride away, and that the police have been given quotas to fill for loitering violations in public places. Places around penn station/central post office were pretty good to air-out at until the whole "code orange" BS.

Re:

Um, aren't you supposed to loiter in parks?

I seem to recall what was probably a hundred people sunbathing in that "Sheep Field" or whatever in Central Park. That illegal now?

Re:

Nah, it's legal, it's more that central park takes a long time for me to get to, and everywhere else isn't loiter-able anymore :)

Unless I sit in a starbucks or some other $4 coffee place.

So you managed to get things working using the unlimited Internet profile? If not, I can send you my collection of ppp files....

What did you have to change in order to make things work for you?

Re:

No, I still can't get it working. I'm just ssh'ing to a port 25, then going from there.

I have a GPRS data provider profile on my phone, with CID=10, so I'm using the 10# dialing, but then the IPCP stuff fails, even though I added all that stuff to my peer config, as you suggested.

If you can send me all your relevant files, that'd rock.
