VoIP; saving $40/month [Apr. 4th, 2004|02:37 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
Got my Digium cards installed in my new home server, running Asterisk (the Open Source Linux PBX), doing long-distance calls through VociePulse Connect, which is pay-as-you-go. No monthly fees.

I just went to cancel my $40/month Vonage service (which I see now is cheaper on their website) but a friendly chap in India told me the cancellation department doesn't work on the weekends, and you can't cancel online. I'll have to do that tomorrow.

Asterisk seems to be able to do anything, from what I've seen and read. People like voicepulse.com run entirely on Asterisk. It's pretty hard-core.

There are boatloads of docs, howtos, and example configs all over the web for Asterisk.

I signed up to VoicePulse Connect just to see if I could. (Only ~£5, after all)

Got no validation email yet, though, after a few hours. Either it's going through a human or I managed to mistype my email address for the first time ever. *sigh*

Still, should be fun to see if I can make LJ PhonePosts from VoIP software on my PC and how good it comes out. I'll wait until I have a bit more financial stability before I invest in an actual phone!

Who does your POTS -> VoIP termination?

Incoming calls just go to my home POTS line (which I'm forced to pay for anyway for DSL). I could also use VoicePulse for that, but they have no Oregon numbers.

You still have the landline then?

Yes, required for my DSL, so Asterisk uses it for incoming calls and outgoing local calls. Uses voicepulse connect for long-distance and international calls.
