Style contest ... almost

I was about to type up the official LiveJournal layout style & color theme contest when I realized how much style stuff I haven't really completed ... so now I'm cleaning up and adding a bunch of stuff. Don't worry --- I'm not breaking anybody's styles, there are just better ways to do things now.

Mailman

I want to install Mailman. I'm forcing myself not to do it tonight. LiveJournal needs to good mailing lists: users, style-dev, announce, dev .. @lists.livejournal.com ... that'd rule.

Contest time!

I've spent all night preparing the style system to kick ass before I announced this, but now it's time: LiveJournal Contest!! If you think you can make things prettier than I can, you've probably already won! Naah, seriously ... go read the contest rules if you're interested. I'll be posting this all around the site and to style authors.

I went outside!

I went outside for the first time in several day and goddamn is it ever hot! I love air conditioning.... oh, sweet sweet air condition, how good you are to me. Oh, so about my venture: I walked down to the end of the driveway and checked out the road that they're repaving (we're still kinda trapped in the house). And, I got the mail and got 3 new DVDs! Independence Day double-disc set, Election (thanks to mobley!), and Sleepy Hollow (thanks to benson!). I've got 7 DVDs the past 3 days straight ... this is getting kind of ridiculous, I need to take that link down from the FAQ ... I mean, I love getting free DVDs, but I'm starting to feel a little guilty now. :-)

Server Upgrade

Okay, this is probably confusing to those of you that don't track LiveJournal's server situation, but I've put in a request to have the LiveJournal server upgraded from a single Pentium II-400 w/ 384 MB of memory to a dual Pentium III-550 w/ 512 MB of memory. The extra and faster processors will be nice, but the real win should be the new memory, but I thought it'd be nice. "But Brad, didn't you just upgrade the server?" No, I moved the server to its own machine and reinstalled everything from scratch, set it up well, and rewrote a lot of the database code. Software changes can only go so far. The physical hardware was the same all along. "But Brad, LiveJournal's working so nice the past two days after the software upgrade!" I know, that's good, but will it keep being nice in a week? a month? It's better to upgrade before there are more problems. They have to go buy new hardware, so this upgrade won't happen until I get back from vacation (around the 12th)

ugh

We just got a new advertiser for FreeVote.com that wants to run a campaign but doesn't have their own ad serving system, and we haven't set one up yet, so I'm writing one real quick here ... this is really lame and boring. On the other hand, I'm surprised companies license technology this simple for five grand a month.
