At last, sanity!

This is one of the smartest things I've read in awhile:
The point of having a ".kids" domain is to provide a safe place for young children to surf. But ICANN staff members wondered who then would decide what material is safe and how registrars could be certain that visitors were actually children.

"Given the international reach of the Internet, the complexity of these definitional issues is compounded by many diverse cultures and a variety of community and individual views on the answers," the staff report says.

They get it.

i'm going to bed. getting kinda bored. cole has a soccer game tomorrow at noon ... i'm gonna try and wake up before then.

went to cole's soccer game. the other team's coach and the coach's wife got red carded but wouldn't leave so the ump left. eventually they did leave and the ump came back. crazy stuff.

i'm really tired now, all of the sudden. the clock on is all fucked up. i gotta figure out what's up with it. *sigh*

Went and saw Bedazzled with the family. It was okay I suppose, but not great. Elizabeth Hurley's body and wardrobe were about the only redeeming qualities. Brendan Fraser's character was so dumb it made me sick.

I'm still tired. I just want to fall asleep for a month straight.

recommend gadgets for brad!

Ate dinner. Still tired. Might read a book later.

For now, I invite everybody to help me in a little research project. I want to buy three new gadgets, and I need recommendations on which to get.

1) Digital Camera -- my old one broke, an Epson PhotoPC 600, and I need a new one. Looking for: Compact Flash (I hate Sony Mavicas... no offense, evan), takes pictures quickly, looks professional (no gimmicky Kodaks with cartoon menus... no offense, dad).

2) MP3 Player -- never owned one. Looking for: more than 64 MB of memory, or one that takes Compact Flash (I love Compact Flash's form factor and low cost). Must be able to show long file names and/or ID3 tag info. I don't want one that plays CDs too ... I already have a discman. I don't want moving parts.

3) Scanner --- my parents have one, blythe has one, sarah let me borrow hers most the year my freshman year ... i need my own finally. All too often I need to scan things and can't. Looking for: flat bed, Hewlett Packard (preferred), 8.5x11" (minimum and maximum), high DPI, parallel port or SCSI interface .... USB would be okay, but I'd prefer if it weren't.

It's been awhile since I did research into any of these categories of products, so any and all information will be much appreciated. :-)

Darts and drinks.

Just played a game of darts with the family ... I lost, but it was fun.

My mom just came and brought me some Goldschlager. Interesting drink... spicy as hell and has little flakes of gold in it. Weird.

(Update: she came in and told me not to post that she's giving her underage son alcohol.... heh: too late.)

dead harddrive.

well, the 60 gb maxtor is now officially dead. keeping track of all my harddrives must be pretty difficult, so I'll recap the whole story:

bought two new drives for my new computer.... 15 gb western digital and a 60 gb maxtor. i was really careful installing both, as I always am, making sure to ground myself and never touching the components directly.

i boot it up... high pitch screeching noise. it bugs me for weeks while I'm trying to figure out what's making the noise. i keep the case open for several days trying to narrow it down. once i figure out that it's the western digital, I hear it screeching and I quickly roll back my chair (on a hard plastic sliding mat) and slide under my desk and push on the top of the drive, hoping it's just rattling around in its mount, rather than a problem with the drive itself. i accidentally place my thumb on the bottom of the maxtor ... *spark* i static electricity'ed the hell out of the maxtor drive.

so, in summary: 15 gb western digital drive started bad. but I got that one replaced yesterday. the 60 gb drive I killed because I was stupid. what a waste of $247.00.

in addition to my gadget to-buy list of mp3 player, scanner, and digital camera, i'm going to need to add "new harddrive". however, i don't think it's too important .... i don't really need that much diskspace.

i hearby rate my gadget list from most wanted to least wanted:
  • digital camera (oh how I miss my old one)
  • scanner
  • hard drive
  • mp3 player
think i'm going to read now.
