Night in review.

Blythe and I watched The Abyss on DVD. She hadn't seen it before. *gasp* Blythe then was craving Dicks, so her, Anil, and I went.

Worked on LiveJournal a bunch. My main accomplishment of the evening though was bringing my inbox count down from 85 message to 20. I'm really happy with my work on it tonight, so if I wake up to any stupid messages, I'm going to be angry. You'd better make sure your message is intelligent and well thought-out and researched before you bug me. Last year I redirected all my spam to go to Scott for a few days .... maybe that should be my curse onto those that fill my inbox: I'll fill yours right back. :-)

Going to bed now.

no sleep for me.

can't sleep, yet again.
it doesn't even bother me anymore... i just accept it now.
it's raining outside... i like the sound of rain.
considering staying up all night and being tired all tomorrow, so i can sleep on time.
revjim rules.

iced tea and cookies.

if my subject's stupid, blame Blythe. she give me the suggestion. now she's hitting me.

we just had iced tea and cookies and watched Scooby Doo. now we're going to go on a walk or go fix her computers. she's said that if she can get one of her machines functioning like it should, she'd put linux on the other one .... hehehehehe. project!

she uses my linux box fine when she's here, so i think she's capable of running a helix-gnome setup. :-)

so, we're going to go network her computers and fix 'em up.

blythe's networked.

blythe's computers are all setup now... i gave her a pcmcia network card for her laptop, we went to the store and bought a cross-over cable, and now her desktop and laptop can share files, so she doesn't have to use sneakernet to back stuff up. we also hooked up a mouse to her laptop so it's usable (damn touchpads).

we then put a NAT program on her laptop (because it's faster and has a working modem) and got her desktop online, sharing the connection. didn't get DNS working (I was trying to get the stupid NAT32 program to be a DNS server, but it's dumb... i'll have to find a better windows NAT program). i suppose I could've just gave her desktop machine a real DNS server, but for speed I wanted it to be dynamic, based on what she was assigned when her laptop connected.

we'll put linux on her desktop tuesday or so, once we're both free and her paper's done. she's eager to use x2vnc and loserjabber. :-)

here's the funny thing: her winmodem looks to have better support under linux than windows. we searched the web for drivers for her Lucent 1636t00 1646t00 chipset modem, but all we kept running into was Linux information. maybe we'll set that box up to do the NAT instead, if we can get that $18 modem to work.

home now: bored. what to do? think i'll clean my room and then work on LJ.

(no subject)

took a shower. turned on my space heater at full power before I got in.... now i'm back sitting here in my boxers, enjoying the warmth of the room, listening to it rain outside.

status on my camera and accessories:
camera: seattle departure scan
ac adapter: reno, nevada departure scan
rechargable battery: not yet shipped
carrying case: not yet shipped

i want iced tea.... ice is upstairs. outside my room is cold.

need to clean room. can't move. gets messy so easily. sad.

chicken, NAT, procmail

Damn it's raining hard out there. I was just over at Blythe's for dinner... she made terriyaki/soy/something chicken and sticky white rice, with garlic and some other stuff. I helped a little, but not much. I did dishes, though!

I also got her desktop computer's internet access working using NAT. Only problem is, NAT32 on her laptop has a 60 minute time out, then you have to start it up again. Are there any good free Windows NAT programs? I hate Windows so much, just because so many stupid things like that cost money.

Oh, I added a new recipe to my .procmailrc that catches a bunch of spam:
    * ^Subject:.*              [0-9]
It checks for a bunch of spaces, and then a number. A lot of spam programs append a bunch of spaces and then a number to the subject so that SMTP servers don't auto-detect their bulk mailing as spam.

I should really switch to maildrop instead of procmail, but I keep putting it off. maildrop looks so much cooler.

sql, bills, clean room

I've been working on three new LJ features: 1) rewriting the message board system (and changing the table structure to be faster, like I did for the journal entry tables a few weeks ago) ... 2) to-do lists, even though it isn't journal related: I need it for myself, and we want it for lj_biz. each to-do list item has its own message board (which the new message board system accommodates) 3) the adopt-a-newbie system.

but I'm knee-deep in SQL (what a dumb expression: knee-deep) so I decided to take a break and pay the electric bill finally. have to find my checkbook first, so that leads me to the next project...

I need to clean my room. No more excuses... I'm going to do it! When my Nikon camera arrives tomorrow (hopefully), I'll setup a "see brad's room" page, which'll be like a webcam, but only updating every 5 minutes or so... then you'll see my dirty as hell room in all its 3.1 megapixel glory.... you'll be able to count the dust particles!

A duel!

Tonight, a duel:
    Melatonin vs. Iced Tea

Which will win? Only time will tell.

Results will be posted at 8am or 2am depending on the winner, respectively.
