copying 20 gig of data over from my linux box to my freebsd box so i can upgrade all the hardware and reformat the drives. even over a 100 mbit connection and not using ssh, it's still slow. :-/

oooh! Net::FTPServer version 1.0.0 was just released! LiveJournal's been using a pre-1.0.0 version .... wonderful FTP server. 2 thumbs up.... go get it.

what IMAP server does everybody recommend? muerte asked me today and I said, "I dunno... I'm using UW-IMAPD and it sucks." he said the same. we're both curious if anybody has a favorite.

heh... evan just mailed me to tell me about net::ftpserver and i was about to reply saying, "Dude... I just said that in my journal", but then I realized I wrote this a long time ago and forgot to hit submit.

I was going to stay up all night building my new system and installing/learning debian, but instead I've decided to sleep. It took about 2 hours longer than I'd planned to backup all my data, and I found a bunch of ripped music that I'd forgot to encode, so I did that too, instead of backing up the wav files.

In the meantime, though, I cleaned my room.... so that's good. Kinda disappointed I didn't start working on my geography paper today like I'd planned to.... I guess I'll be doing it at the last moment, like always. :-(

I'm going to go get my 7 hours of sleep so I'm not grumpy tomorrow. Lot of things to do tomorrow.

what to do?

so many things I want to do today:
  • build my new computer
  • go get wood and built a structure to rise my bed up several feet so I have more storage space underneith it. i made plans already... just need to go buy wood and a saw.
  • work on my geography paper. i don't really want to do this, but I'd like to get it done before the evening before it's due.
  • fix livejournal stuff.... this isn't fun at all, but i have to do it sometime
hmmm... i think i'll start by doing my computer, since most the parts have a 7 or 10 day return time.

i took an extra long time building the system, making sure i did everything carefully and correctly, even to the point of making sure all the cables were clean.

i went to boot it and... everything works! installing debian now.

oh, one thing that doesn't work: i didn't hook up all the case lights.... i hate those.... so hard to figure out what goes where, and the motherboard manual isn't much help, either. i guess i'll figure that out later.

system so far:

866 P3, 256 MB memory, 50x cd-rom (secondary master), 18 gb IBM drive (primary master.. boot disk), 60 gb maxtor (secondary slave), 60 gb ibm (primary slave). the two 60 gbs will be in a raid-1 array.

i'm going to need to buy a new sound card, since my old one was ISA (heh) and I don't have any ISA slots on this motherboard.

okay, enough blabbing.... back to installin'

I'm now running Debian!

Um.... I have no clue what I'm doing though.

Plan: edit sources.list using vi, then apt-get install emacs.
