Whoa

I went to bed about 12 hours ago (just after 9:00 pm or so). I woke up very confused.... I was in a dream in a dream, then I just popped out of both at once. (tail recursion!)

Now I feel like tons of time has passed (well, it has) and I don't know what's going on and I'm missing something (but I know I haven't).

I don't want to go to school today but at least I only have one class.

I know what I want to do today.

misc

my sickness has moved on to the next level: In the shower I drained a half gallon of snot from my sinuses. felt great. and i bet you wanted to know that, huh?

bills: have something like 8 to pay. but one of them was a credit and doesn't require payment. how cool.

i'm totally unstressed lately ... feels odd. i can think of a billion things i should (or rather, could) be doing but feel no pressure to do any of them. i think it's kinda nice, but it's a foreign feeling.

cold. i have no wood. i have no fire.

woo! another bill that wasn't actually a bill.

blah... another huge voicestream bill. need to switch providers still can't find anybody i like. oh well.

need a female/female phone line connector... i have two long cords that are both a few feet too short to reach my phone/fax in its new location.

room's a mess now (was so clean yesterday) .. have a phone line going across the room and server boxes everywhere.

need to take servers over to evan so he can set them up. oh, and need to order a new switch so we can actually plug all the servers in. stupid hardware shit.

need to work on my research project. (supposed to meet with professor today?) need to do german.

damnit, the UPS man just brought another server. so much stuff to setup. :-/

and all i want is ......

i dunno.

*drool*

This server rules... 6 hot-swap fans (3 side-by-side * 2 back-to-back for added redudancy), 3 hot-swap power supplies, 6 hot-swap PCI slots (up to 64 bit/66 Mhz), 5 hot-swap drive bays, quad-xeon capable (only have 2 in for now), 12 GB of memory (oh, and 640k system memory, of course!)

The case and everything is very well designed, too. Too bad it's hanging bringing up eth0. Silly ASL. They ship their servers with a DHCP setup. Yeah, like a server is going to be using DHCP.

Glad I didn't drip any snot into the PCI buses when I was installing the IBM ServRAID card.

Interesting: Kernel 2.4.9-ac9-2. Yay for pre 2.5^H4.10 kernels!

Shit, I thought I was going to try and work on making my journal entries interesting. I lose.

runnin' shoes

I went for a little jog the other day in my Sketchers and it was more comfy than running in my running shoes.

I think it's time to get new running shoes.

Thoughts on language translation

I was talking to toast about this a little before class today. The reason that most machine translation sucks is that it tries to do everything in one step without giving the end user a chance to help out in the middle step.

See, translation isn't as easy as mapping a set of source words onto the equivalent set in the destination language. (well, the US Government thought so during the Cold War and funded a bunch of efforts to auto-translate Russian military texts....)

There are two steps in translation: converting the input text to a rich interlingua, then that interlingua into the destination language.

What I want is to be able to either enter text directly in the interlingua (which will be painful and slow, but accurate) or better, let the translator show me the interlingua it generated, let me correct errors it might've made from lack of context and/or intelligence, then do the interlingua to destination language.

That last step is really easy once you have the correct parse tree of the sentence. And that's the part I want available to me that Babelfish, say, doesn't provide. So I'm now interested in starting my own unless there's a good open project out there already I can help with.

On the other hand, that first step is interesting too ... with Dan Brian's work on tagging words with their correct wordnet sentences, that makes generating parse trees all the more easy ... the input tokens actually are meaningful now (words by themselves are useless).

Anyway, all very interesting. Wish I had 50 hours a day to play.

Update: this looks kinda cool, but nothing's there yet. I should join the mailing lists.
