Why I give the ACLU money...|
Why I give the EFF money....
I know it's been a whole week since I told you to donate money, so here's your reminder.
Yus. Me too. I have the card and the hat.
I have said this to my friends in Ithaca, but i will reiterate: i'm confident within 5 years i will not be in the US.
The ACLU represents, for me, a lot of what is wrong with our modern "rights-based" culture. It is in many ways, anethema to my way of thinking and my way of life. That having been said, I have become a "card carrying member" since the day the Patriot Act was passed. The government, too cowardly to do anything about actual terrorism, is using the terrorist acts as a pretext to trample the rights of ordinary Americans, and although the helpless sheep here will not fight it, I admire and support those who do. One comment, however. I am a member of ACLU now for 2 years, and a member of NRA for about 5 (yes, I like ALL the rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, and the ACLU for some reason just treats the Second Amendment as if it does not exist). The NRA, to my knowledge, never sold my name to anyone. The ACLU, on the other hand, has sold my name to about every single liberal interest group they can think of. They don't understand: I am not an enviornmentalist, I support big business, support tax cuts, oppose government sponsord health care, and really don't care one way or the other about homosexuals being allowed to serve in the millitary. Why do they assume that because I support civil rights, I automatically will toe the party line for all of these other issues? It kinda pisses me off.

That's an understandable complaint. I hate the flood of mail they send me, as well. I actually have a pile for it, which I skim once every few months.
