Laptop.... [Jul. 22nd, 2004|12:45 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
My new laptop is supposedly "out for delivery". This means I can't go eat for fear of missing its arrival.

Update: it arrived. holy crap this is awesome.

I am also in "out for delivery" limbo! Isn't it annoying that they only update the shipping status like twice a day? I want a realtime GPS feed from the truck.

I once missed a delivery and went out driving aimlessly for the FedEx truck, armed only with a cellphone to call FedEx headquarters and have them tell me where the truck was last reported.

So yeah, they have the info. The just need to wire it up to the interweb.

And as I was writing this, the FedEx guy just arrived! Yay!

My assistant Fire Chief (voluntter) works for UPS. He said that they tried putting GPS in the vehicles and even did a test on it in his area. The drivers loved it as it gave them directions etc. They RAVED about it. *1.

However, they, and the union were NOT pleased when each driver was brought in to the office one at a time and asked questions like: "Why did this stop take 5 minutes, why were you in this cul-de-sac for 30 minutes when there was only 1 package to deliver, why did you go 5 MPH on this road when the speed limit was 45/45 in a 40, etc." The union raised hell.

*1 Weird rules for UPS drivers:
1. You must LOCK the door to the cargo area front and back each time you leave the cargo area (even if you are in the front of the truck!)
2. You may not plug anything into the 12 Volt wiring on the vehicle (like radios etc) as this is considered employee theft of energy!!
3. You must have a hand on the vehicle at all times when you have a foot on the vehicle (ie if you have a monitor to deliver in a big box you have to set if on the floor of the vehicle and then walk out the front cargo door making sure you LOCK it! and walk around the truck to the back.)
4. If your pickup has to get to the airport by X time and you have X+15 minutes to get it there and it is too heavy to lift by yourself, you best break your back getting it there. (you lose your job by being late, not by breaking OSHA regs)

Well, that was too much information for this...

Whitaker after seeing it said something to the effect of, "Man, I gotta get out of here before I cream myself."

Is that the sort of person you want molesting your laptop while you're out to lunch?

Why the Toucan?

I read through your "psyched" feature list, and nothing specific to the IBM jumped out at me. I own the Dell version of the Rhino and I love it. I'm interested to know why you went with that model specifically. Size/Weight would be a vote against the Rhino maybe.

I tolerated 1justin for months. He didn't break any rules on the site, so I never suspended him.

Until today, when we noticed he was posting LiveJournal's phone number and asking people to harass us.

That crossed the line, so he's now suspended.

Then when his friends started spamming our personal journals and public communities with that "you fags" picture, that crossed the line too (our anti-spamming rules), so they're gone.

Good thing you commented anonymously.

Civil communication gets you further than harassment, but you guys don't seem to do that.

I mean, the guy is my friend and I think he's a riot.. but I've always been supprised you guys put up with it for so long. We just assumed you thought he was funny so you put up with it. He totally had it comin tho.

Is there any chance of 1justin ever being allowed back on Livejournal? I understand a lot of people involved with him crossed the line, but I don't think it should be held against him. (The part where he posted the LJ phone number WAS pretty stupid.)
