Yesterday [Sep. 22nd, 2004|10:19 am]
Brad Fitzpatrick
-- returned my broken computer in Vancouver

-- because it was close, I turbo-hiked up Multnomah Falls instead of doing my normal daily run

-- watched "A New Hope" from the newly digitally-dust-cleaned scanned-from-original-prints Star Wars DVD box set release. xb95, jproulx, and iseebi came over to join dina and me.

Pretty fricken beautiful print on that movie, huh? It made me way more excited than I already was (and I was pretty excited to begin with) to see the next two movies. I really can't wait.

How does it look? Amazon has good things to say, but I haven't heard any responses from real people.

Was very beautiful. Like Erik, I tried to look for dust or scratches, but there just weren't any.

I first read that as "Was very beautiful, like Erik..."

They may be digitally dust-cleaned and scanned from original prints, but they're still the "special edition."

Yeah, I cringe at a number of the new scenes.

Han walking over Jabba's tail looks so fucking terrible.

Yeah, no way I'm giving Lucas money/encouragement for this revisionist atrocity.

Someone gave me laserdiscs of the original versions of the first three a few years ago, but I don't think I've ever watched them.

I feel the need to point out that due to the glue used and its large size (and inherent bending under its own weight) a laserdisc only lasts about 20 years under the best circumstances. That probably puts your StarWars LDs at the end of their life spans. It would seem that we need to cary over all of our digital media onto fresh new disks, not just our home directories. Of course, Gods willing, the Lucas estate will release the unadulterated film after the man knocks off.

My question is, what happened to Lucas in the early 90s?

Once the third film is released, no doubt there'll be a SIX-MOVIE BOX SET with EVEN NEWER VERSIONS of the original three that everyone will be expected to buy again to see the “these are not the droids you are looking for” scene in a snowy region with christmas lights.
