x prize rules [Oct. 5th, 2004|04:00 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
X Prize evolves into annual competition
"In 10 years, everyone will know that if they want to, they can go to orbit in their life," SpaceShipOne designer Burt Rutan told NBC's "Today" show on Tuesday. "

Teams will compete in five different categories to win the overall cup: Fastest turnaround time between the first launch and second landing, maximum number of passengers per launch, total number of passengers during the competition, maximum altitude and fastest flight time.
Rad. (the second quoted bit at least ... not sure I'll hold my breath for affordable space tourism in 10 years....)

We'll see. It feels too much like "in 2000 we'll have flying cars!" to be taken seriously. But I guess companies are working on it already. Where there's cash, there's a way.

I'd definitely pay $10k. The $100k that Space Adventures is charging is pushing it a bit, unless you got to spend a couple days up there and orbit the entire planet, but I imagine instead it'd be a quick flight up and back.

Someone (I've forgotten who) is in the process of raising $25M as a prize for the first private team to reach LEO. And, I assume, return safely. That's a major jump in technology, and it'll be interesting to see if there's the same range of approaches there was for the X-Prize.

Did you just use "rad," and mean it?

Whoops, my bad. I didn't realize I was reading archived posts from 1992. ;-)
