Bumping into Mr. Gates [May. 12th, 2005|01:01 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
I read on my friends page that ydna bumped into Bill Gates:
...
He glanced at me leaning against my car, the white MR2 with the LINUX license plate, and saw the large penguin on my shirt and smirked.
....
Heh.

I wonder if he was thinking 'What a dork. Even /I/ don't have my operating system on my license plate.'

You should ask him if MS has any openings for a Sr. Level Sex Administrator.

I tagged along with a coworker once to deliver something for Bill. Before even getting into the parking garage I had to provide id and my employee badge. I had to do it again once inside. I talked to his secretaries and then got a tour of the building since I had time.

We passed through a hall of about 10 security offices on the way to his office and it was explained to me how certain areas of the floor near his office have pressure points that trigger silent alarms. Both him and Steve Ballmer have secret entrances to their offices. I was also shown the supposed bulletproof suburban that they drive him around in.

Well, it doesn't look like he needs anything so sophisticated when taking the kid to school.

Yea. I thought that to myself. To be honest, at the time (and now) I wondered just how much truth there was to what they were saying. But eh.

my mind is weird.

For some reason I woke up thinking about this.

I'm sure that Bill wants to provide as much normality for his son as possible. I don't doubt for a second that there were eyes on them when he was dropping him off. Based on the security I did have to go through and all that I saw (regardless of what I heard), I find it very hard to believe that they were there alone.

Re: my mind is weird.

You know how you can tell when nerds are aware that people are watching them? That's what I saw showing through. He's clearly a middle aged man trying very hard to make the best experience for his kid and the nerd in him is still dealing with the pressure of others watching and judging him. I suddenly have a whole lot more respect for the man.

Just for the record, and despite the fact that I honestly don't hate the guy for doing well at business, I find the fact that Gates drives a late '80s 911 with an AUTOMATIC transmission quite the appropriate analogy to operating system design choices between modern POSIX-like and Windows XP/2k3.

I also posted this as a comment to ydna's original post:
"Actually Bill and Paul Allen each have a Porsche 959. They spend several million getting them in to the country, and had to hide them for two years until they could make it legal to license them. My HS auto instructor used to be a Porsche technician, and he was actually pulled over in one of Bill's 911s on a post-fix test drive. I know about the 959s because a friend of his works for BMW, and Bill drove his when he went to pick up an armored BMW limo. I do have pictures."
