Mp3 is better for me since I'm not allowed to download any program other than the ones than come with Windows and they play on the Media Player. : )

Who exactly is not allowing you to download any other programs other than the ones and so on? The government? The software? Your parents?

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why proof reading is a good thing.

The answer to your question is: The evil company I work for.

Capitalism is easier.

In the end, it's always the people themselves who stop a revolution.

Aren't there non-patent-encumbered MP3 encoders that don't actually compress? Or WAVs are widely supported and non-patent-encumbered? Phone posts are so small and low-fi that it wouldn't cost too much to save the OGG and stream the WAV, and then you wouldn't be rewarding patent evil.

Hey, don't need to convince me.

But I didn't know of any non-compressing mp3 encoders. I'd be curious if you have a link.

Isn't that sort of a contradiction in terms? Isn't it the point of MP3 that it encodes and reduces file size?

But if the thing is already so small that you don't care about filesize, but there are devices/computers out there that will only play mp3 files, it makes sense.

Show me a computer that can play an MP3 but not a WAV and I'll show you a computer in need of a beating.

And the iPod richly deserves a beating for it. There are plenty of other MP3 players out there that will gladly let you fill up their tiny hard drives with gigantic WAV files and play them.

It seems to me that any device which purports to play audio should be able to handle raw audio. It just seems so fundamental.

MP3 files just hold MPEG frames. I don't believe there's any standard way to have an MPEG frame that is just raw PCM.

.mp3 is not a container format like .wav, .aiff, .ogg are.

The GIF format was never intended to support uncompressed GIFs, but encoders that generated them were created to avoid Unisys's GIF patent, and if you understand how LZW compression works it's easy to see how it was done. I thought someone had done the same for MP3s but I can't find a link now.

Conveniently, they post their rate card here:
http://www.mp3licensing.com/royalty/index.html

You'll have to try to play the fun game with their reps about where a given product falls within their definitions.

Hey, my grandparents are Germans. Give me money and I'll grant you the use of the format. You could give it to them but I don't know if they're still alive.

Since next to my grandparents, also my parents and myself are Germans, I conclude that I deserve the money more than you do! Besides, I've worked for the Fraunhofer Institut before, so (BRAD!), HER MIT DEM GELD!

I like it. Do wonder what it would cost for a license for Wikipedia, including reuse and distribution by anyone, anywhere.:)
