Dear LazyWeb,

Find me a list of all high schools and colleges in the country.

For instace, this is pretty good for colleges:
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/FSLookupServlet

Lets you list colleges by state, at least. Would need some spidering.

But high schools?

With love,
Lazy Brad

Go by county and then just let people enter something individual and freeform? There's an awful lot of highschools, and there's new ones being built all the time.

...there's new ones being built all the time.

Or in the case of Seattle, being closed down all the time.

Both the ACT and the SAT have a pretty extensive list of high schools, but you might not be able to simply download a big table of them. You might need to pull cities out of the old zip (zips? zipcode?) table, submit them to the SAT/ACT high school search pages, and then screenscrape the results.

All I've got off the top of my head is either something from the NHS or the association of secondary school principals.

The NHS web-site is being a jackass to me, else I'd look for links.

Not just high schools, but all public schools by state or ZIP code:

I would like to use it to find depressed properties with acreage that have been moving on and off the market for a while in the Snohomish County area. That and to take over the world. Can I have it, puhleaze?

I want to prove a theory about a conspiracy having to do with High School names, jocks in that school and the amount of terrorists produced yearly in the Netherlands! Please, can I have it too?

That sounds like the kind of thing you either have to pay for or access through a useless web interface. Your browser is just a thin client. You do not get the data!

Of course, I really meant to say “dumb terminal”. Must stop trying to rant while half asleep.

I can see where this is heading, and I just want to say that it seems like it's sealed to become outdated very frequently. I would just let users specify the type and name of their school and search for similar schools by area. Sort of like what already exists for interests; the first user to think of it creates it, and other users can then add it.

This happens on MySpace, you just type in where you attend. It then searches through a list and you can select the school (or at least last time I used it). Sort of like how you said, first person makes it, the rest are allowed to add into it.

To Brad, small question: At $150 a pop, and all of these LiveJournal addicts, Made quite a pretty penny eh? I can't believe that I even bought one. I don't have the money, but since I use it so much, and the fact I support Open Source.. I figured in the end it was a good deal.

I don't own the company anymore, remember? :-) I don't personally set the price, nor personally receive the money. I'm not sure how much the company made. It's weird with official bookkeeping, amortizing the permament account lifetime over lots of years.

Yeah, but no matter how you slice it, cash today is still cash today. (Otherwise, the offer would never'd been made.)

Speaking of which...

I don't own the company anymore, remember? :-)

Aw, c'mon, Brad! :-) They didn't have enough to offer you an all-cash deal. I'm sure they gave you some equity in the transaction, as well. Plus a seat on the board. Woo hoo!

Of course, I doubt you'll unscreen this comment. ;-)

Agreed completely, plus let them vote for "these n schools are actually the same". That'll take care of accidental typos as well as intentional nicknames, both sanctioned (e.g., capahs; yay) and derogatory.

Hrm... wondering just how many PS####'s there actually are in NYC? :-)

It'll be fun to watch the privacy issues, too. Some parents still can't find their kids' journals because, well, LJ alone has 7M+ of them. But narrow it down to one high school, and, well....

ask the people over at thefacebook what they did.

They have a pretty complete list including the names of both the high schools that merged in 1991 to form where I went to high school.
