Treo 650 [Sep. 12th, 2005|01:19 pm]

Dear Lazyweb,

I just bought a Treo 650 after playing with scsi's a couple times now. Also jwz has one so I can bug him with questions. (God knows he owes me with his relentless LiveJournal questions complaints.)

Where can I buy a 1GB storage card for it, cheapest?
How can I write programs for it?
Is there a good LiveJournal client for posting images, ala Nokia's LifeBlog? (or is email the best option?)

Thanks!

I've seen name-brand SD 1GB cards at Fry's for about $50 after rebates.

I'll email you the apps that I have, and you can sort out which ones you want. The're all free and I got them from Justin @ Nullsoft.

I'm not sure offhand where the cheapest is, probably Fry's has some good 1GB SD. It's all about instant gratification anyway.

I don't remember where I got mine.

I can only hope it's nothing like the Nokia Series 60 phones... Their minimal "Hello, World!" demo is four CPP files, and four header files. They're not small files, either. It makes Windows development look like a walk in the park. ;)

Nah, writing software for PalmOS is totally painless. It's just a gcc cross-compiler. The only kink is that you don't have libc, but use this workalike that uses things like StrCpy() that work on handles instead of direct C pointers. At least, that's how it was when I last did it a few years go.

I exaggerate a little, but the learning curve's steeper than I'd like.

Bah! Work gave us 650's, and mine crashed too much to even use. Most of ours have some weird crash issue, and I haven't been able to open the mail program for a month.

Now half of my friends list and my dad have one and aren't whining about it crashing all the time. So I'll have to get one of my own once I move :) Maybe we just got a bad batch.

They released a firmware updater of some sort that fixed most of the crashing (and related memory) problems within the last few months, I think you can get them all from palm's website. Its like 1.12 or 1.13 depending on your carrier I believe

I never got far with palm development, but PRC Tools is the guts of it.

I'm eager to hear your opinion of it; I've been considering getting one myself, as many of my friends have them (Ojan, Chad, the people you mention).

I always buy my flash memory from www.mydigitaldiscount.com, the guy behind the operation is awesome and they always have the fastest cards on the market for very low prices

I have some ant scripts and a test Java app that builds agaist the MIDP API. That's for generic cell phone development so you don't get nearly the functionality of the full Palm environment but it is "cross platform." If that's the kind of app you want to write, I can dig up a tar/gz of the code.

If you want to write PalmOS code, get psyched about programming for the original MacOS. 'Cause that's pretty much what it is. Traps, baybee, traps.

Dragon-char is some PalmOS code i worked on a couple of years back. The splitsville branch of dragon-palmos is a big whap of half-decent example code for PalmOS.

Yes, Handhelj :P

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=31825&package_id=23875&release_id=133868

..okay, beta1 sucks a little. The final version is pretty much done, except the windows hotsync client isn't finished yet.

Writing programs for PalmOS is annoying. I hope you like C, cooperative multitasking, a weird "database filesystem" and no linux support since like 2002 (i.e. enjoy gcc 2.95, no PalmOS 5 emulator for you!)

Actually, Handhelj can't do that at all. Forget I said that. Unless it would be easy to add.

The rest stands though :P

A Very Long Time Ago(tm), I used AvantGo and found a LiveJournal pseudo-client. AvantGo is an offline web browser which allowed you to subscribe to sites and download them each time you HotSynced; the thing I found was a set of CGI scripts which would generate an offline version of your friends page and give you a form to fill out to create an entry. When you HotSynced, the form would be uploaded and the entry would be posted.

I doubt that's really what you want, though, especially with a Treo. (Lucky bastard.)
