School system [Sep. 22nd, 2005|03:09 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick

LiveJournal now has a school system. (Disclaimer: I did jack shit on this project, so I get no credit.) Now that I've been playing with it, I have some cool ideas, but step 1: we need more data.

Friends from high school and college, go add yourselves:

Aloha High School

University of Washington

Click "Add" and enter your years of attendance.

More on this later, I'm sure.

Where'd you end up getting the city/school listings from? I remember you looking for a source for that a while ago.

We asked users for it, then cleansed it. Also merged in a list of US universities, UK middle schools (i think?), and any other misc list we could find.

I'm pretty confident we'll get most everything in a pretty short period of time.

I'm slightly shocked that it lists the school in the 800-person hamletvillagehellhole to which I went to most of K12. You'd think it wouldn't find such aberrations.

Does it sort them alphabetically on your profile? Seems like it should sort by date attended. Pretty neat way to find people though.

as we don't have "states" in the UK, we tend to regionalise things by counties, and conurbanations around major cities (e.g. Greater London, Greater Manchester)

in your uk schools, you already have people abbreviating the country "Surrey" as both "Surr" and "Sy"... and someone has listed a city of "London" as being part of "Surrey", which most of it definitely isn't.

Someone needs to take some time to make a saner list of regional areas, please. perhaps check out the way it is done on friendsreunited.co.uk

So what do you do about "duplicate" data? For example the two schools listed in Royersford, PA?

* Spring-Ford Area High School
* Spring-Ford High School

As these are the same school, how do you go about consolidating the data?

"Simon's Rock College" and "Simon's Rock College of Bard", both in Great Barrington, Massachussetts, United States, are the same entity and should be merged.

hehe...hopefully "cool ideas" will also at some point in the distant future include less glamourous but functional enhancements like ways to gracefully merge/combine duplicates...like I tried to look up where I went to college, University of California San Diego...which is about 3 blocks outside the city limit of San Diego... so it is listed as both "University of California" in San Diego "University of California San Diego" in La Jolla... doh. not that from a programming perspective I could really see any easy way to deal with problems of that type other than the types of ways syndicated feeds are merged (ahem, manually). But that's a problem to stick on another intern, right? ;-)

Still needs a little bit of cleansing for duplicates:

Would it be okay to list schools involving umlauts? (ä, ö, ü) I added my university and wrote ae (in Universität) because I wasn't sure, but it'd be great to know that could be changed to ä.

We're Unicode-aware everywhere.

This is a feature I would have never guessed that you would have added :)

Any other features you are not implementing? :)

I need to find out if there is a good way to get a dump of my entire journal just to back it up (with tags... hell a toy that would allow me to pick terms and apply tags to all old posts would be cool). An option to just dump it into SQL statements would be nifty :)
