html 4.01's attributes list over at the w3c says that the title attribute can be used in "All elements but BASE, BASEFONT, HEAD, HTML, META, PARAM, SCRIPT, [and] TITLE."

that could be used instead of <abbr> or <acronym> unless there's something else that i don't know.

I left my XP laptop at work. Can you let me know which attributes IE shows tooltips for? What about <div>? That'd be ideal. Or abbr, if that works.

the title attribute seems to work on <div> but not <abbr>.

I agree, <span> is probably the most sensible thing to use.

yeh span would be a better choice, as it shouldn't want to affect any layout, unlike div. hey.. thats what span is for :)

IE doesn't support ABBR at all. It just ignores it as an unrecognised element. It's been my experience that IE will handle TITLE on just about anything that actually gets rendered.
