Iowa [Oct. 21st, 2005|10:33 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick
In Iowa for my grandpa's 70th birthday. Just went out gambling at an Indian reservation in Nebraska (right across the border).

The Indians were the "Winnebago" tribe and the casino: "WinnaVegas!!!" I got pictures, oh yes.

Bought a 1GB SD/MMC (is there a difference?) card at Walmart today for my phone, since I was stuck at Walmart anyway waiting for my mom to do other errands. Then stuck the MMC card into a photo machine and made a bunch of 4x6" prints.... yay technology when it works.

Both my mom's and dad's grandparents are both running Windows XP with 128 MB of ram. Imagine how painful that is. So I tried upgrading both machines, doing all the proper research on crucial.com's site and finding a little parts store, but one of them was stubborn and wouldn't take the memory that it was supposed to. Tried a dozen combinations of old/new memory (tried 3 different 256 MB sticks) and different arrangements. In the end I had to give up. A BIOS update is available, but the changelog doesn't address anything memory-related.

My now-70-year-old's computer took the memory fine, though, going from 128 to 384 MB, and it flies in comparison.

Researched an antique tractor's serial number for my grandpa, since I'd done it for him once before.... this one was made in 1952, making it the newest one he has. He thought this tractor was a '42.

dist-upgraded my hoary to breezy over Wifi over cable in a town of ~80 people out in the middle of corn(?) fields. And I have cell coverage here! Technology moved on in!

Dina's in actual-Vegas. Krissy's watching the hound dog. I got my picture taken with an Elvis hound dog status at WinnaVegas.

The end.

As weird as it is, always interesting reading about this stuff.

I think it does make a difference. IIRC, SD is faster, can go to higher capacities, and can do "secure" things (like locking the data and requiring a password). Not seen anything that uses the secure part of SD, but the extra speed is nice. For the most part though they're interchangable.

SD vs MMC

SD/MMC (is there a difference?)

Apparently. Off the top of my head, SD is backwards compatible to MMC (I believe all MMC readers can read SD) but also has some weird "security" feature built in, the details of which I have no idea about, which can only be used in readers which specifically know about SD.

They seem to cost about the same amount, though.

Re: SD vs MMC

Other way around -- all SD readers can also read MMC, but SD cards are too thick to fit into MMC readers. Mostly SD cards are just thicker and have DRM features.

SD cards are thicker than MMC, so very old devices accept only MMC, not SD.  SD cards include a DRM system that nobody uses (thank you *AA).

SD cards have a few more pins (mostly for the DRM i would guess), many/most Nokia Series 60 phones don't accept SD. (Newer ones are using RS-MMC, i don't know if they accept rs-sd though)

Re: SD vs MMC

SD has some mysterious "encryption" DRM capabilities that I've never really seen thorough documentation on. The DRM stuff takes up about 100k of the space that's free on MMC cards.

SD also has the potential for roughly 4x faster transfer speeds than the old MMC spec.

Don't Like Wal*Mart

After reading about how Wal*Mart uses its influence on its suppliers, employees, and other companies it does business with, I've decided to never shop at Wal*Mart again. Here's the article from FastCompany that made me decide they're evil. I go to Target instead.

Happy bday to your grandpa!

WinnaVegas sounds really cool. :)

And that is cute. Happy birthday to your grandpa. Big wishes to him. I think that this is very special. Especially because I never had any grandparents and my dad just died a few months ago at the age of 82 (right before his 83rd bday) while I was only 31 years old. Life is so short. It taught me not to take anything for granted.

PC100 comes to the rescue

The PNY memory configurator did the trick. Computer is now happy. (As happy as an 800 MHz Celeron with 384 MB can be running XP)
