Situational Leadership [Apr. 18th, 2006|06:14 pm]
Brad Fitzpatrick

A bunch of us from SixApart are off at a two-day Situational Leadership training class. I had the lowest of expectations (based almost entirely on the lame-soundingness of the name) but I've been very pleasantly surprised: the class is actually quite enjoyable and useful.

Here's the gist, even if the terminology is different:

The only phrase you need as a leader:
"Yeeeeeah. I'm gonna have to ask you to [x y z]."

"If you could just do that from now on, that would be greeeeeat."

Man, I used to have a boss who would preface everything he asked of me with a long drawn out 'Yeeeeeah' - had no idea what Office Space was and never understood why I was losing it nearly every time he asked me to do the most mundane tasks. Good times.

Perhaps you could introduce the situational leaders to consensus decision-making.

That in concert with bike-shedding would be my preferred method of management. Do you have a good URL for bike-shedding?

It's a good thing you mentioned bike shedding or I might be scared you were serious about consensus decision-making.
