california wins on highway speeds. 55? Wtf oregon? No ticket, just seeing speed traps|
I know, I know. Just about every state is better than Oregon (speed limit wise). 55 drives me nuts here.
I drove up to Oregon with friends last year and we got paranoid and slowed down right after crossing the state line. I remember being surprised (and annoyed) and how much the friends we were visting obeyed the speed limit and how afraid they were of getting a speeding ticket.
Yeah, that always drove me nuts when I first moved to Oregon. Speed limits are retardedly low. I'm all about 75mph outside of metros.
But I did like 85 the whole way from LA to SF, so what gives.
I got an 84 in a 75 ticket in the deserty area out in New Mexico. I was the only car on the road -- cept for the cop. :p
Ugh, sounds like Austin. Why are some people so slow? Dallas dropped a lot of speed limits down to 55 but let me tell you no one goes under 70.

A couple of links
You're quite welcome to the mercifully small bits of West Virginia I got to drive through at the age of 17, with the speed limit up at 85 or something and lots of hills and twistiness. And my parents in the car.
It definitely sucks.
Love driving in Montana, though ;) Too bad they got rid of the whole no speed limit thing.

Re: blech's comment above, somebody on my friend list claims
that there is a pretty disproportionate decrease in inefficiency from 55 to 65 (and it just gets worse) because friction due to air resistance goes as O(speed^2) [actually, he says speed^3, but that doesn't sound right].
oops, rokukitty ignore that, I hit the wrong 'reply', hooray.
