wifi on planes [Jul. 18th, 2006|05:50 pm]

[Current Location |Atlantic Ocean, 30k feet]

This is crazy, using the Internet at 30,000 feet.

And 110v power outlets, not even the empower weirdness. Except it seems only so many people get power at once. I think I need to remove my battery and run on DC-AC-DC only w/o charging the battery.

Currently over the Atlantic, halfway between Canada and Greenland.

Wow. That's definitely some luxury. :-) Beats the heck out of any American airline I've flown in the last few years.

posting a comment to 30,000 feet for sheer novelty purposes.

Your comment missed me then, because I'm 38,000 feet now. Probably was before too.

Welcome to the Future

It seems that any time people leave the country they get access to awesome technology.

I know you tested it. What's the latency - and what's the traceroute look like? :)

600 ms usually, sometimes 3,000-3,500 ms.

Bandwidth was good, though:

$ curl http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.17.6.tar.bz2 > /dev/null
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current
Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
4 39.3M 4 1961k 0 0 59947 0 0:11:28 0:00:33 0:10:55 73977^C

Artur was saying it dynamically changes its NAT source IP depending on which base station you're closest to. He had one ssh session coming in from Japan and one from Europe, both active at the same time. How dope is that?

Screw altitude. Screw 110v power outlets. What's the uplink like? Are you getting any (bandwidth)?
