4.5 years later, ESN arrives:

http://community.livejournal.com/paidmembers/18194.html

I'm loving the comments. People seem to love it.

It'll be available to Plus/Free users next, at lower limits. We're just slowly adding more users before we open the floodgates.

Enjoy.

isnt it weird that facebook just launched a very similar thing today, showing all user actions and shit..

people seem to hate it on there though, as far as ive seen. its super intrusive, showing everyone what youve been doing and who youve been talking to, etc

The facebook thing is different because they took a very simple interface which was already starting to get cluttered with notifications and turned it on its' side, throwing every possible action into a list regardless of whether or not you'd care to see it. For instance, why would I care that a friend of mine just left a group they are in?

ESN in LJ is different because, based on the wording, "With the new system, you can set up notifications for all types of things including when someone adds you as a friend." The interface on facebook is cluttered, but the idea is fine. It just removes the value in existing notifiaction by putting too put out there, so to speak.

I find it amusing that so many people think they're going to get “stalked” on LiveJournal. I know there have been cases of this in the past, but it does always make me think “Don't flatter yourself! Why do you assume anyone would want to stalk you?”

The fear of change manifested as "Stalkers will use this!"

I'll take you one step further, mart: If they are so worried about being "stalked" on LiveJournal and every new feep is such a huge threat... why do they have their journal hosted on a public journaling site known for feature enhancements of this type? Better yet, why have their journal on the Internet at all?

I remember when the "Nudge" feature was decried because it would be "used for harassment." Such silly people.

Not stalked so much as harassed. This feature (apparently) makes it easier for me to see all of your activity, in all journals, yes? So the attackers follow you. Prior to this, I don't think it was so easy to do. Your activities had to be discovered by the mob. Now the victims of the week will face an effective and organized mob.

Nope. It lets people see get notified of what you post in your journal (which they could already see) or follow comments to a specific post (which they could already see). None of the notifications aviailable allow you to be notified anytime a person posts anywhere on LJ.

Hey, now the hell has officially frozen over --

wouldn't it be nice if I could reply to comments by actually hitting "Reply" in my mail reader?

Been thinking that for a long time.

Shouldn't be that complicated to support.

Looking very useful.

Now it will be extra useful if the Dev people fixes the e-mail problems that they broke... I've been without e-mail notification for the past 2 months so far. :/

If you somehow can chase ths up, I'll be very happy and support LJ even more.

Thank you.

If this is true, I'm sad that support closed this without escalating it. We weren't currently aware of any email problems with the new system.

Hey there again, did you do anything to this?

Was asking because all of sudden I am now receiving the LJ emails!

I've looked at changelog and there was a few email notification changes in there, perhaps related?

If you did do something, thank you!

There was a major crap flood coming from that network so you were banned along with the attackers while it settled down.

Ahh, I see. Many thanks.

Funny thing is, I did ask if LJ did ban my I.P. and the people at the support said no.

Guess they was wrong.

Anyway, many, many thanks again.

From everything LJ support could see, we didn't. Somebody in 6a netops did it without telling anybody else.

I told them we need a way for LJ support to see at any time all netblocks that are blocked at our core routers. So we'll be working on that.
