Java GPL'd [Nov. 13th, 2006|07:53 am]
Brad Fitzpatrick

I used to write a lot of Java. Over time I stopped, as it was inconvenient. I couldn't just apt-get it like everything else, and I just felt dirty agreeing to licensing terms before downloading it. And I knew I couldn't redistribute it easily, etc.

Looks like it's time to care about Java again:

I can't believe they went with the GPL and not some CDDL-like stuff. Go Sun. Bravo.

Too bad they're about 10 years too late with this.

Better late than never.

Now there's a bunch of Java code out there which can land in Debian, etc. Java's still a fine language. It's not perfect, but what is? And there's a million CS grads that only know Java. If that means those million CS grads can participate in open source now, all the better.

I'm more hopeful that something like Scala can take off.

prepare them to pick up most languages

In theory: yes.
In practice: no.

At least that has been my personal experience.
