Article on LOL and OMG and such creeping into student essays...
"Everything is shorthand," Jeff Littwin, lead English teacher at Roosevelt High School. "No capitalization. The spelling is just awful. There's no commas, no periods." [emphasis mine]

The key note speaker at PSU's 2008 commencement noted that Gen Y has added LOL and Duh to the english vernacular :)

I'd bet that the mistake wasn't Littwin's, but either the reporter's or the copyeditor's.

Well, regardless of whether or not Littwin was to blame, the copyeditor clearly made one by not fixing the error or acknowledging it.

Why isn't there a contraction for "there are?" There're enough weird ones already.

I propose "there're".

It is true that student writing is awful though. I couldn't hide my disbelief when students turned in papers that lacked capitalization and punctuation. On top of that was atrocious spelling of common words like "made", "truth", and "island". I seriously thinking of starting next school year with a crash course in writing that lasts until I'm satisfied with everyone's performance.
