The problem is there's no feedback mechanism telling you which apps are being offensive with regard to keeping the CPU, display, radios, etc active, so you can't properly assign blame (which would in turn make the developers be more efficient, since they might not realize they're being bad about battery life), and instead you blame the phone which is all you can do based on the data available. (though I'm sure there's things the base phone and OS could do to be more efficient as well.)
Make sure you're not running a background app that keeps the GPS alive. If you sync a lot of mail, or a lot of mail often, or keep 3G on, or keep chat open, etc... all those things add up. Some people report that turning off 3G, wifi, bluetooth, gps, syncing, IM ... they can get 5 days or something ridiculous of battery life.
Pay attention to the "% time running" stat in the device info. It should be pretty low.
In any case, I'm only optimistic about future updates. (Deleted comment)

> How do I get a process list or end processes without rebooting the phone?
The official answer is it's all magic and you shouldn't think in terms of "processes".
Unfortunately I hate the official answer. Instead you just have to be aware of which apps are being dicks (which is very hard to tell) and uninstall them or not start them (or know exactly how to end their expensive parts), which you very often have no clues about.
I hope they fix that in the future, making it obvious which apps are being dicks and how to kill/disable them.
Isn't this the same company that produces a web browser that shows exactly which web pages^Wprocesses are using the most resources? Is Chrome available for Android yet?
Sorry to jump into the conversation, but I'd hated the battery life in my iphone, so about a month ago I picked up this nifty Kensington device - and when I switched to my G1 I was thrilled to see that the Kensington works with the G1 perfectly well. If I charge both overnight, I end up with enough battery to last well over 17 hours (that's the longest I've been plug-free since I got the G1).

Hey, why isn't Instant Trombone on the market? It's consistently one of the best pieces of android demo-ware on my phone.
